NEW SURREALISM – ‘Dark Matter’

A free exhibition by the artist Maximillion.

Opening night – Saturday 11th November at Malt Cross

“An exploration of this history of surrealism with a contemporary twist!”

The exhibition ‘Dark Matter’ draws together a collection of over 20 giclee digital art prints, from the original artwork of New Surrealist Maximillion. This is Maximillion’s first solo show in the UK for 31years, and features the newly discovered technique of ‘transient’ collage.

The imagery used in these hauntingly beautiful prints, ranges from18th century French portraiture to1940’s and 50’s film stars and pin-up girls.

Some works feature pop portraits reminiscent of Warhol’s, and though featuring embellishments of gold and copper foil, do not explore notions of celebrity, but instead offer the viewer a vision of unknown beings glimpsed in another realm. In these pictures bodies and faces are often obscured and distorted, sometimes by masks, found objects, tricks of light and a frequent motif of a spiral snail shell. Some figures have insect heads suggesting a Kafkaesque metamorphosis, provoking a sense of unease.

With this work Maximillion carries the torch of surrealism into the 21st century, a time traveller in a dark cave. The light illuminates the bones of a dream. It’s new and unknown. Enter the world of dreams with New Surrealism! – Come along to the show!

Featuring a band lineup curated by I’m Not From London!

The Hijinks play dreamy psych rock kickstarting this evening in style.”

“Musically, it’s where post-punk meets shoegaze, although the keyboards, guitar effect and reverbed vocals give it a sprinkling of psychedelia as well.”
