From Lincoln to LA with The Shrives!

We can’t wait for our The Shrives album launch at Rough Trade gig on Sat 18th March and caught up with band leader Matt Grocott to get the lowdown on how it all started, a playlist of some of his favourite bands and the interesting twists and turns The Shrives band has taken from Grantham to California… Enjoy!!

‘Early incarnations of The Shrives started as a ska/punk cover band in Tom’s (bassist) basement. It was back in late 2012 and that’s when we started getting to know each properly and sharing music we liked and jamming together. I was doing my acoustic stuff on the side, through the name, Slice Of Spandex, it started as a joke because I was sick of how serious I was having to take things with my band before. I wrote some of the songs on this record under that name. They all have a distant meaning to them, when I write a song, I tend to just let the words flow, I don’t change much. Josh tells me it’s usually like reading a dream, where one minute you’ll be dreaming about sitting in your house then the next you’ll be on a flight to mars or some shit like that.

We had a weird but totally amazing opportunity to go to California to record this album. I had been speaking to Joey Armstrong and the guys from SWMRS on MySpace in 2010 and I was sending them demos that I had been recording in my bedroom. It was a great feeling to have them take notice of me, as I liked their music a lot. I met up with them when they played in the UK and we kept in touch via facebook. I started sending more demos over and Joey came out with that he wanted to record it in his studio. I had no idea what he meant, does he has a small studio where he lived or something, I had no idea. Turned out to be Jingletown Studios and Green Day’s Billie Joe was going to produce.
It has been nearly three years since that happened and now we’re finally getting it out to the world. People have been very patient with us, we were looking for a label, management, anything to help propel us up the ladder a bit more. We had magazines like Kerrang! and Rock Sound share our stuff so it kind blew my ego up a little bit. Things came and went and we had a lot of let downs, but now we’re ready to release it and promote it ourselves. I feel a lot more comfortable about it now than I would of done two years ago. I’ve learnt a little more about the industry and how it works.’
See you all at The Shrives “Back In The Morrow” album launch at Rough Trade on the 18th March with support from The Vaarlets and more – Free Entry!!
