Hi it’s Ryan again! Back with another 3 music videos from 3 local bands that I think you should check out. Like my last article, I’ll be talking about what I liked in the videos and picking out elements I enjoyed from all of them.
Don’t Forget Rupert- Keep Up
I saw these guys at Dot to Dot back in May and they were brilliant and their music video is the perfect match to their style, so fun and outgoing. This video out of the 3 is definitely the funniest, starting all awkward with them in bow ties playing dull music at a boring work do as the bosses argue in the corner, then as soon as he’s gone the real fun can start, them throwing away the bow ties and wearing their own clothes creating this great juxtaposition in the narrative as they take over the party, getting the whole crowd grooving to the beat while the boss is stuck on the toilet. The last shot of this gets me everytime, when the boss walks back in to find the band stark naked only having their instruments to guard them, the drummer’s wave breaks me every time.
This is a really well shot video, simple and funny narrative, editing on point cut to the beat just a really fun video and the bands energy is always top notch.
The Mocking Jays- Kiss my neck
Definitely the most cinematic video on this list with the band playing on a foggy mountain side, using this natural environment to show the story of this relationship unfolding, but not in the typical sense of using multiple locations where they meet at a party, dancing in a random club, having a romantic dinner or playing mini golf with each other. Instead, they act out these scenarios in the same location which is so creative and perfect because it doesn’t take you out of the video at all by the sudden location change and keeps it matching the same mood. Using the singer for the role of the man in the relationship was a great decision because it didn’t take away any attention from the band. The cinematography in this is phenomenal and together with the editing to slow it down at the perfect time looks stunning. This my favourite music video from them and i can’t wait to see what they come out with next.
Tesla’s Kiss- Let Go
This is how a one take video is meant to be done! The video was planned and choreographed perfectly, with all the elements moving in to place at the right time to follow the cameras movement. The video’s atmosphere is almost like its own thriller film, with a guy finding a church, with a group of cult members in masks surrounding him, with loads of crazy neon text on the wall. The sequence was timed perfectly with the singer running around the church in time with the music and having the lighting change throughout, with the lighting going from a safe yellow to this angry blood red by the end, creating this horror atmosphere. It looks brilliant on camera and showed the pace of the narrative of him getting boxed into.
Hope you enjoyed this break down of these bands videos. Please go and check them out! You’ll find links to their socials at the bottom of the videos and if there are any bands videos you want me to check out then send them my way on twitter @Ryanwheatley17
