For some reason, the people of Nottingham seem to take St Patrick’s day very seriously. A few years ago, I was in the city centre for the occasion in the late afternoon, and I saw two women having an all-out brawl in a water fountain. A hasty police intervention followed, and a few minutes later, both ladies were surrounded by their respective friends, a seemingly safe distance away from each other. All was calm. Then, in a flash, with extraordinary grace and agility, one of the fighters gave their team of restrainers the slip, and charged at full pelt toward the other. As onlookers oohed and ahhed, and shrieks echoed around the square, and the sun slowly sank behind the city roofs, I felt that I had glimpsed some small, inscrutable but essential part of what St Patrick’s Day was all about. In some ways, this playlist is inspired by that seminal moment. In other ways, it’s just a compilation of some decent Irish alternative music, with a few traditional ballads chucked in for old time’s sake. Good for getting drunk to.
