“It’s an eerie effect, seeing disembodied heads singing in a zooming cyberspace. There are TRON-like elements, visualizing the data that appears in our consciousness at light speed.”
Independent Cleveland based alternative electronic duo She 1 · Him 2 have released their second single of 2022, ‘Stuck Inside’. Featuring graphics by Steven Archer of ‘Stoneburner’ and ‘Ego Likeness’, the track’s theme is centered around the notion of negative thought patterns and adhering to them – becoming bad habits that drag us down. One’s true passage to freedom is figuring out how to shatter such toxic routines and just… let go.
The igniting duo combines darkwave rocker and former Lestat front-man, Evan Nave with Cassie Bishop of Shy Moon. Channeling the likes of Ladytron, Giorgio Moroder, and Big Data, She 1 · Him 2 has captured the attention of Post-Punk.com, ReGen Magazine, and Darker Side of Music. Collaborating with Grammy Award Winning Producer Michael Seifert (Tori Amos, and Paul Simon), ‘Stuck Inside’ awakes an electronic sound unlike any of the curators’ past work. Relevant rhetoric around equality, equity, and fun, has proven these topics to be fundamental in a post-pandemic world. This age has resulted in a long-distance approach when producing the track, utilizing an electronic sound unlike previous releases; ‘Split the Line’ and ‘Spoken Words to Light’.
Love the track! I have to admit, this track is very different from your previous stuff as artists and as solo musicians. How did this venture into electronic club music arise? How are you finding it?
Evan – Thank you! We’re really quite proud of this one. Growing up, I was a huge fan of New Wave and Electronic music in general. I guess I’m just at the age now where I can explore it.
Cassie – I’ve always loved exploring playing different musical genres while always being a fan of the industrial/goth style, so when Evan sent me a sample of his music, I was excited to start writing melodies and lyrics for it.
Before She 1 • Him 2 became the synthesized duo it is today, what were your backgrounds? How did the music industry find you?
Cassie – I’ve played in a number of bands, duo groups and solo acts starting fresh out of high school. I mostly play guitar and sing, but have done various different projects and am always looking for things that can expand my musical horizons.
Evan – We have that in common. I’ve also been in bands since high school, starting with a Devo cover band of all things. When Lestat spun up in 1989, I really came to enjoy the gothic subculture and performing live. When we split in 2000, I got to get into some great technical metal with PKS for about another 10 years. We had another run at Lestat with a fresh release, but then went our separate ways. Now, I find myself re-energized with She 1 • Him 2 and working with Cassie. The music industry is ever changing and always has its challenges, but I can’t see myself doing anything but writing and delivering music. Trust me, I’ve tried to get out several times, but I’m always glad to get back into it.
Who were the biggest musical influences for this track? Who inspired you on a melodic and lyrical level?
Evan – Musically, it’s a mash of quite a few styles for me. Kind of a love letter to the New Orders, VNV Nations and Daft Punks of the world. I really wanted something with a groove that would make people want to get on their feet.
Cassie – When I write Melodies I can’t really say I’m inspired by a particular artist, I just listen to the music, create a melody and play around with it until it’s something I can feel good about.
What was the creative process like for this track and how did you find it?
Evan – Cassie are truly a product of the pandemic. We started right before everything went down. I was looking to push myself out of my goth/metal comfort zone and I was looking for a partner to do the same. Cassie has an amazingly unique voice, but she’s never really done electronic music before. I asked her to take part in this, thinking she’d say no, but I’m so very glad she didn’t. We work separately from each other for the most part due to the Covid world we live in. I write the track musically at home and send it over to her to do her parts in her home as well. Until now, we really only saw one another for photos and studio time. All our videos have been shot individually as well. Eventually, we’ll try to mix it up, with her writing the melody first or perhaps work together on something.
Where do you aspire She 1 • Him 2 to be at in a year’s time? What immediate hopes do you have for this single and the band?
Evan – We have been slowly ramping up over the years with singles here or there and two songs this year. We’re currently working on a 4 song EP for 2023, and hopefully we’ll hit the stage at some point.
Cassie – I would love to have some songs in the media.
Evan – Agreed! The more ears to listen to us, the better. Legacy is super important, and it would be great to hear our stuff all over. Streaming, videos, TV, etc. Hopefully we can bring some cool joy to people all over.
“A great track, and this is a great duo… will do well on dance floors as the beat and melody are there to get you on your feet”
