Sunday Singles Club #2
Alone by Honeybee Sparkles
Wow! If there were a song and video to voice our children’s thoughts right about now, this is it. If there were a song to voice everyone else’s, then this will also work just as well! Where are our friends and when can we start playing again? WHEN?
“Alone” by Honeybee Sparkles is the first of what I hope to be a lifelong contribution to a scared and undervalued industry. We’re all missing playing. In the video Honeybee Sparkles wanders from roundabout to rope swing looking for her friends, for anyone to play with as she sings sentiments echoed throughout the world’s kitchens, living rooms and socially distanced streets in perfect harmony alongside a bubbling minimalist electronic scale. The off kilter paced ascending notes combined with Honeybee’s natural range and innocent synthesised delivery create a bittersweet lullaby lamenting a time we all took for granted, and that we so need back. We’re on day 74 of self shielding lockdown and as we watched the video, I described to my four year old, how Lola (7) was also on “family holiday” and missing her playmates. He asked why she was outside. This song is a beautiful reminder to protect the mental as well as the physical health of our children and to keep their childhood fun, with ice cream AND cherries on top! To make things better for the generation that are inheriting our mistakes. Honeybee’s singer songwriter mother, Chai of Chai 6 produced and filmed this unassuming yet precocious debut track with her daughter. The video was quickly snapped up to premiere as part of this weekend’s Nottstopping Festival. The city applauds and a bright future awaits…
Dance With You
Marty are an energetic pop band and their friendship is evident through the positivity emanating from this track. The video is a pleasant fun filled pop song filmed through the medium of Zoom and Facetime Messenger. A socially disdance video if you will. Sorry!
Good vibes, friendship and positivity emanate from this track. They all have attuned voices and their songwriting and band dynamics never fail to impress. I can see shades of Cors, Cranberries and Texas in their work and certainly within “Dance With You”. It will be interesting to see how the band builds on what has the potential to be a formidable force of pop unity.
NEVER STOP LOVE
What back in the land before time might have be monickered a ‘dance floor filler’? I’d like to see where this track goes, as I could see a lot of interest in this for EDM labels and remixers. I’d like to think it will inspire people to call up their old posse and reminisce… and to plan. It’s an uplifting one and sings of a desire to change, “We’ll get through this, we’re the thinkers from our youth”. Never Stop Love is Bradley Drawn Boy’s first official self produced single and it wears it’s welcome influences (David Holmes, Andrew Weatherall) on it’s big baggy sleeves like slow haciendic housey hug that it is. Whack your headphones on and listen to them as you jog round the city, while you stare at the sky in hope and dance like no ones crying. It’s a banger. Evolution is the proof.
