A Review of Sara Leanne’s Emotive Single ‘Song From Your Daughter’- From the Uprooted EP

Sara Leanne's 'Song From Your Daughter' is a quietly devastating piano ballad, built from grief and delivered with remarkable restraint

Written after the loss of her father, the track sits in a space between blues, soul and classic singer-songwriter tradition - warm and jazz-tinged, without ever settling neatly into a single genre.

The song was born out of necessity as much as craft. Sara has described the writing process as a form of therapy, a way of working through the helplessness, guilt and numbness that came with her father's passing. That vulnerability translates directly into the recording: the vocal take that made the final cut only arrived after Sara stepped away mid-session, overwhelmed, before returning to sing it through in one unbroken performance.

Production is understated throughout, led by Andrew Jones on piano and mixing, and shaped by engineer Matt Butler - whose credits include work with Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd and Johnny Cash - at Yellow Shark Studios in Cheltenham. The result favours space and feeling over polish, letting the piano and voice carry the emotional weight without embellishment.

There's a fitting symmetry to the release too: the cover art is by Pete Edwards, Sara's father, the very subject of the song. It's a detail that grounds the track further in its personal origins.

Sara's own musical history adds further context to the performance. An internationally touring pianist and vocalist, she's known for performing the role of Christine McVie with Rumours of Fleetwood Mac, officially endorsed by Mick Fleetwood, and for building a career as a musical director and collaborator across the industry. That experience shows in the control and confidence of the performance, even at its most exposed.

'Song From Your Daughter' introduces Sara's debut EP, Uprooted, OUT NOW, which explores a year of upheaval across family, love, friendship and music. On this evidence, it will be an EP built on honesty rather than artifice: one for fans of Carole King, Bonnie Raitt, Eva Cassidy, Sarah Jarosz, Tedeschi Trucks Band and Madison Cunningham.
