The call came from Florida. A politician running on a harsh anti-immigrant platform, automated and indiscriminate, finding its way to a Brooklyn-based, Budapest-born songwriter still on a list from his years living in Miami. For Atticus Kane, an immigrant himself, the calls arrived with a particular weight: the mythology of America as a melting pot colliding, repeatedly and mechanically, with the reality of a political moment increasingly hostile to the people that mythology was built on.
That collision became 'Love Me Not', lifted from his album News From Delphi, and it is a more complicated and more interesting piece of political writing than most artists would produce from the same material. Rather than offering a clean argument, the song sits inside the contradiction: "Loving you is like a crime" while somehow still managing to "cure me with what makes me ill." The push and pull, Kane explains, is where the love me, love me not concept originated. A song about loving something while confronting its failures, about dissent as the highest form of commitment.
The fast-paced, rocking energy that drives the track gives the lyrical ambivalence its most productive context: the indie rock and alternative pop framework, informed by touchstones including Courtney Barnett, Sam Fender and Declan McKenna, generating momentum that keeps the emotional contradiction alive rather than resolving it. Kane describes himself as embodying analogue love in an unjust world, and that formulation applies precisely here: the song is warm and propulsive and alive to the music even as its subject is genuinely difficult.
Fame Magazine, Backseat Mafia and Dancing About Architecture have all supported his work. He wants to be part of the fight that ensures America continues to aspire toward a more perfect union where anyone, regardless of background, religion or class, can realise their full potential. He has made exactly the right song for that purpose: one that refuses easy consolation while remaining completely, urgently human.
