Colorado Based Rapper - Dr Wippit -Releases Inventive Track ‘YUP’

Confidence is a difficult thing to fake, and Dr Wippit does not try.
‘Yup’, the new single from the Colorado-based rapper and guitarist, announces itself with a low-slung bass groove and stays exactly there for its entire runtime, warm and unhurried, utterly sure of itself.
“I took a drum beat and changed the instrument to bass guitar, and with some tweaking had a nice groove to put some guitar and keyboards on top of. It seemed to lend itself to confidence rap, so I took it that direction.” DR WIPPIT
The production origin story is worth knowing: the track began in FL Studio when Dr Wippit rerouted a MIDI drum pattern through a bass guitar patch and found something that moved. Ibanez Iceman electric guitar and keyboards followed, and the result is a track that sounds both homemade and fully realised. There is no polish for polish’s sake here. What you hear is what it is.
Genre-wise, ‘Yup’ draws a line between rap rock and something looser and more instinctive. The guitar has real weight, the rhythmic backbone has hip-hop roots, and the whole thing floats in the same general space as 311 or early Gorillaz without sounding like either. Dr Wippit has been doing this long enough, from Chicago underground shows with Chronic Jaywalker to ska-hip-hop crossovers with The Kenilworth Project, to have absorbed a lot and let most of it go. What remains is his own.
The track is simple and direct, built around the feeling, as Dr Wippit describes it, of being “confident enough about where you’ve been and where you’re going that you’re ready to take everyone there.” That is not a complicated idea, but it is a true one, and the track earns it rather than just stating it.
For a song this relaxed in its construction, ‘Yup’ has unusual staying power. It is the kind of track that rewards repeat listens not because it reveals hidden depths but because it simply feels good every time.
