Julia Kate Releases Her Most Personal Release Yet- ‘truce’

Julia Kate is 21, studying songwriting and music business at Berklee College of Music, and has already quietly built an impressive catalogue — two EPs, a string of singles, and a growing fanbase that’s been following her evolution since her first release with producer Johnny What (who has worked with Juice WRLD and Pentatonix, among others).

She gigs around Los Angeles when she’s home from school, plays the Troubadour and the Hotel Café, and writes with the kind of emotional honesty that her influences — Taylor Swift, Lorde, Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey — have each made central to their work. You can hear all of them somewhere in her sound without feeling like you’re hearing any one of them specifically. That’s a harder balance to strike than it looks.

‘truce’ is her most personal release to date. Growing up tall and always self-conscious about her body, Julia found that even positive lifestyle changes didn’t make peace with her reflection any easier. That experience — painfully common, rarely articulated this clearly — is at the heart of the song. Written alongside longtime collaborator Nick Rosen, who built the full arrangement around the melody they developed together, it’s a track about recognising the internal voice that keeps the war going and deciding, not to defeat it, but to stop feeding it.

“Calling a truce doesn’t mean everything’s healed,” she’s said. “It just means you’re choosing to stop fighting.”

That distinction is what makes ‘truce’ genuinely moving rather than simply reassuring. It doesn’t promise transformation. It promises something quieter and more honest: a decision.

The production reflects that restraint — delicate, carefully constructed, with Julia’s voice sitting right at the centre of it all. Nothing competes with the lyric, which is exactly right for a song this intimate. Her biggest track to date, ‘I Wish I Knew (One More Kiss)’, showed her fanbase was growing — ‘truce’ suggests the songwriting is growing right alongside it.
