Review: Lovisa Altin Begins a Journey Through New Worlds With Cinematic Pop Single ‘The End of the World’

Most artists release a song. Lovisa Altin has released a portal. 'The End of the World', her cinematic pop interpretation of the Arthur Kent and Sylvia Dee classic, produced alongside Stefan Storm, functions simultaneously as a standalone piece of music and as the opening chapter of an interconnected universe: a framework in which every future album represents a new world, a distinct musical genre and a continuing chapter in one larger adventure.

The story she has constructed around the release is deliberately mythic. Walking home through a grey, dystopian world she feels trapped inside, Lovisa notices a mysterious light breaking through. Following it leads her to a spaceship capable of taking her anywhere. That spaceship, in the logic of her broader artistic project, is the mechanism by which each successive album can exist in its own sonic and visual universe while remaining connected to the one overarching narrative. It is an ambitious framework for an artist to build around themselves, and 'The End of the World' establishes it with the theatrical confidence it requires.

Lovisa has been building toward something like this for most of her conscious life. Singing on stages in Italy and Bulgaria during family travels. Appearing on Swedish television programme Supershowen at fifteen. Releasing her first original song at around fourteen years old. A 2020 release that began expanding her audience. Years spent developing simultaneously as artist, producer, songwriter, dancer and storyteller, treating each of those disciplines as part of the same creative identity rather than separate pursuits.

The theatrical cross-disciplinary ambitions of Queen and Bowie, Lady Gaga's command of performance as a unified artistic statement, the world-building of Janelle Monáe and Melanie Martinez: these are the coordinates of Lovisa's creative vision. 'The End of the World' plants the flag. Everything that follows will chart the territory.
