A Pop Rock Anthem: Reviewing Felix Rockey's New Release - 'Old New Feelings'
Two cities, two sides of one young artist, and a love song that refuses to stay in the past.
'Old New Feelings', the new single from twenty-year-old Paris-based singer-songwriter Felix Rockey, was released on 2nd October and takes listeners on a rock-infused trip through nostalgia, romance and the strange glow of falling in love for the second time.
Felix wrote the song more than two years ago, in the wake of a heartbreak that left a deep impression. It was only the second time he had fallen in love, and the second time he had felt that intense, electric energy. His idea is that the second time can feel even more revealing than the first, teaching you something new about the way you love. The lyrics speak from the perspective of a young adult searching for love, freedom and reciprocity, and the rock energy driving the track invites listeners to wander into their own sweet memories.
A bright pop sensibility keeps the mood radiant rather than gloomy, which fits an artist raised on the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Michael Jackson and Earth, Wind & Fire. Felix picked up the guitar at nine, and his style blends elegant pop with a joyful, chic energy, tinged with London influences and a sensibility inspired by Nordic poetry. That French-British upbringing runs through the single like a thread.
It is also a milestone for the sound. This is the first song on which the musicians who accompany Felix on stage have all recorded their instruments, and the added collective energy is easy to hear. The video arrived a week later on 9 October, directed by a friend who studies film after a spontaneous conversation. Felix and his director shot in the City of London to reflect the song's British rock roots and in Paris with an actress playing his girlfriend, recreating the romantic tension of the lyrics. As his first music video, it reveals what Felix calls a more sensitive and human side.
Following the self-produced EP Eos, released in February, this is a warm, sincere and confident step forward.
