A Review of dove rd & his lush debut - 'Fantasy'
Imagine a late-night drive, empty roads, the radio off, and a memory arriving without warning.
That is the feeling at the heart of 'Fantasy', the melancholic R&B and pop debut from dove rd. It is a song about carrying someone with you long after they have left your life, and it moves with the slow, cinematic pull of a headlight sweeping across a dark window.

The origin story is half the appeal. dove rd first wrote the song with no one in particular in mind, picturing a person who becomes such a vivid memory that they start to feel unreal, like a fantasy. Then real life caught up. The track sat unfinished until shortly after a relationship ended, and when he returned to it with a completely different perspective, the lyrics suddenly meant something new. What he had imagined had become true, and that shift gives the finished record its bruised sincerity.
An acoustic guitar forms the foundation, with punchy drums, chaotic guitar textures and layered vocals pushing the song into something both intimate and expansive. There is darkness and longing beneath the surface, but also an oddly beautiful glow, the kind that comes from sitting with a feeling rather than running from it. The R&B and pop framework keeps the melody accessible, while the rougher guitar edges stop it from feeling too tidy.
His own path to this moment has taken some unexpected turns. Raised by two pastors, he grew up singing in church before Michael Jackson's Thriller made him obsessed with performing, and he recorded his first song at around seven. College football, an injury, a move to Sydney, a theology degree that became a songwriting degree and years spent working as a pastor followed. Music kept returning throughout. After touring with Emblem3 left him unexpectedly frustrated and lost, a drive along an old road near his home called Dove Rd gave him his name, which a passage from Matthew later deepened. It now stands for peace, rebirth and the freedom to start again. As a debut, 'Fantasy' fits that meaning perfectly: a song about heartbreak that also happens to be a beginning.
