First Listen: The Como Brothers Release New Album ‘Whispers In The Wind’
A shuffling beat, a plucky mandolin and three voices stacking neatly on top of one another: the title track of 'Whisper in the Wind' arrives with the confidence of a band that has spent years learning how harmony works.
Matt Como remembers the moment it clicked. He started singing, Sam Woolf and Andrew slipped in underneath with the second and third parts almost at once, and all three knew they had something.
That instinct runs through the whole record. Seventeen tracks and around 48 minutes move between pop-rock, country-leaning storytelling and folk-pop without losing the thread, and the brothers' ear for a hook, sharpened on a Beatles education, never lets up. 'Halo or Wings', co-written with Ragosta, opens in a darker register, with heavy toms and low guitar beneath a lyric that is entirely in love. 'Somewhere in This Cup' swings the other way, with a country lilt and the brothers trading lead vocals verse by verse. 'The Ride' takes stock of two decades on the road and lands on an acoustic anthem about enjoying the journey rather than chasing a finish line.
The album closes with 'Life With You' in full-band form, its acoustic twin having appeared earlier in the sequence. An organ and a lived-in guitar carry the last chorus home. The duo also finished second in American Songwriter's Road Ready contest, which suits a record this sure of itself.
'Whisper in the Wind' is out now.
