Some songs announce themselves. ‘Your Girl’ saunters in instead, all easy confidence and glossy hooks, and takes it’s time but convinces you it could possibly be the best thing MADISON has released yet…
The London-based, Australian-born artist has built her name on drama, drawing from Sia and Florence + The Machine to make music that plays out like a film score with a pop chorus stapled on top. Her earlier work leaned hard into that darker, more theatrical register. ‘Your Girl’ is something else entirely: lighter, flirtier, still cinematic in scope but freed from the weight her catalogue usually carries.
The origin story helps explain why it feels so lived-in. Madison wrote and recorded an early version of the track years ago in her own home studio, chasing the feeling of a relationship that would make her braver rather than smaller. When she finally took it to Swedish producer Oliver Lundström, a name that shows up on records by James Arthur, Carly Rae Jepsen and TWICE, the pair pushed the song through several different arrangements before finding the one that stuck. Vocals were recorded at Lundström’s Stockholm studio and the production came together remotely from there, and you can hear that patience in the final mix. Nothing about it sounds rushed.
Structurally, it’s smart pop songwriting dressed up in orchestral clothing. Layered backing vocals and a full vocal ensemble give the chorus its size, while strings and electronic percussion keep things moving rather than letting the song sit still. It would have been easy to overload a track like this with cinematic flourishes until it collapsed under its own ambition. Instead, the hook stays the focus throughout, and everything else exists to support it.
The meaning is less about another person and more about who you become around them. Madison has spoken about writing the song as a kind of wish list for the relationship she hoped to attract into her life, and that aspirational quality gives ‘Your Girl’ an emotional core that stops it from being just another feel-good single.
Arriving with over 250,000 streams across 135 countries, nine Spotify Editorial placements and a Top 20 finish on the BCC Music (USA) chart already behind her, Madison isn’t exactly arriving unproven. ‘Your Girl’ feels like the sound of an artist finding a new gear, and a genuinely exciting sign of what her upcoming debut EP might hold.
